Recently Florida legislation has passed the Bill that will make cameras on school bus Stop arms mandatory to help prosecute the careless motorist that ignore our childrens safety. That is big step in the right direction. Now we need to urge our lawmakers to amend Florida Statute 1006.22(12-C).
F.S. 1006.22(12-C) reads: " Each district school board shall establish school bus stops, or provide by district school board rule for the establishment of school bus stops, as necessary at the most reasonably safe locations available. Where unusual traffic hazards exist at school bus stops on roads maintained by the state outside of municipalities, the Department of Transportation, in concurrence and cooperation with and upon request of the district school board, shall place signs at such bus stops warning motorists of the location of the stops."
This law is so vague that Florida school districts and Counties don't know who is actually responsible to keep school bus stops safe for our children. Urge you district state Representative and Senator to amend F.S. 1006.22(12-C) to clearly state who is responsible to make school bus stops safe.

We were invited by the Volusia County School District to speak during a press conference about student safety. The focus of the conference was educating the public and encouraging motorists and pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings. Dr. Margret Smith, Sheriff Ben Johnson, and myself spoke.  The video below is what I said during the conference on October 6, 2011.
